Jeep Brand History

When Jeep brand models first arrived on the scene, they were made to help soldiers get where they needed to go. The government asked 135 auto companies for designs for a "light reconnaissance vehicle" that could venture off the road and tackle all kinds of terrain; the Jeep brand delivered with the 1940 Willys Quad.

These vehicles quickly caught the attention of auto enthusiasts and the 1941-45 Willys MB began to be produced not only for the military, but also for civilians. Soon, seven new models were released. As engineering advanced, the Jeep brand was able to make these models even more capable and refined. The engineers and designers created a model for every driving need, from trucks to wagons.

In the 1970s, Jeep introduced the full-time 4x4 system, bringing a whole new level of capability to the forefront. The Jeep Cherokee became an industry leader in capability. The XJ model also became the first compact 4-door SUV on the road.

In the 1990s, vehicles like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Jeep Wrangler became game-changers as well. The Grand Cherokee offered both on and off-road capability, setting new performance standards. The Wrangler offered a unique suspension and even more capability. With the arrival of the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon in 2003, the Jeep brand shattered expectations and brought unexpected levels of capability.

Today, the Jeep brand is continuing to impress both fans and critics with new developments. Things like new style updates, the EcoDiesel engine and the arrival of the small but capable Jeep Renegade continue to keep everyone on their toes.
